Patent Nonsense

Uncategorized

Patents are invaluable in helping marketing and sales, especially in the launch and early growth phases. Are they really? Venture capitalists, and other business advisers insist technological advantages need to be protected, so they can be exploited commercially. But practical experience suggests otherwise.

The Scottish Paradox I Can’t Resolve

Uncategorized

Yesterday we explained about our latest FP7 project, and how we resolved the paradox between the undeniable opportunity and the unmanageable risk for SMEs getting involved. We didn’t explain the problems we’ve had with the Scottish business development agencies and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) in particular, so we’ll do that now.

Resolving the FP7 Paradox

Uncategorized

We just completed our next proposal for an FP7 (Framework Programme 7 – the EUs current round of research funding).  The proposal had to be finished at 5.00pm Brussels time last night.  There’s no flexibility.  It’s like any government blind tender.  You stick your bid in, and wait. The last thing start up entrepreneurs need [...]

Key Step in Starting a Business is Sales Training

Uncategorized

Starting your own business is exciting, and challenging, and very hard work. Made much harder by the fact that small business owners are invariably strong in their particular expertise but weak in business management skills, particularly in sales. They need training, and especially sales training. Building a small business is even harder, because the sales [...]
