Blue Ocean Strategy

The world’s full of management and business strategy books. Sometimes they really change the way people think e.g. Re-engineering the Corporation. Others just look impressive on shelves in the office.

One of the best guides to the best books is the Harvard Business Review. When a book’s based on a paper published in the review, it’s usually worth attention.  Blue Ocean Strategy is further proof of that statement. Read full post »

“Long Tail” software

In his book The Long Tail Chris Anderson explained to us all there is almost infinite demand in any market that isn’t satisfied by mass market vendors. There’s nowhere this is more true than the market for small business software. Read full post »

Why CRM Projects Fail

In this morning’s newsletter AMR Research suggests - in its article Social Networking the Front Office - “the elevated failure rates for CRM projects suggests the market is long overdue for a new catalyst to change. Wikis, blogs and social networking have largely been ignored (by CRM suppliers) until recently, some are now looking at these technologies to address the issues of collaboration and community”.

Translation - failing CRM companies will save themselves by including blogs and wikis in their software, because these will encourage people to use it. Read full post »

Is this the beginning of the end?

When I worked in management consulting we used to talk about the various phenomena driving changes in business. One of these was the “Dis-aggregation of Corporations” - consulting speak for the “break of up large corporations”. Like so many of these things, this one seemed a little far fetched. Now we’re watching it happen. Read full post »

Wikinomics is changing the way we work

Anybody doubting, or not understanding, how Web 2.0 will change the way we work should take a few minutes to listen to the BBC Global Business program. Peter Day talks to the Canadian management consultant, Don Tapscott, who has just authored a book called “Wikinomics.” Don explains how the internet is changing business in the same way it’s changing the way we socialize.

This is important to everybody, and relevant to us and Front Office Box users everywhere, because we’ve built Front Office Box to help smaller businesses join in the “Wikinomics” revolution.

So do you get all your email?

Like most people I think email has gone to hell in a handbasket. What once was the coolest idea the world has seen is ruined by a bunch of Russian crooks, their Trojans, and their ads for things which promise to improve my performance in the sack. Read full post »

Just what is Web 2.0

Everybody comes across the situation where they find themselves listening to somebody else’s shorthand, and don’t understand a word of it. Insiders develop the use of TLAs, nicknames, etc. to create a shorthand which they can all translate. Read full post »

Is this the perfect storm

Listening to a Harvard Business Review this morning (while walking the dog on the beach) I was reminded the internet as we know it now is really only a few years old.  In the late 1990’s use of the internet was controlled by the ISPs and the talk was all about capturing customers with content.  The battle was between Compuserve, AOL, Yahoo etc. and people paid for use. Blog Marketing?

Ever since we started talking about Front Office Box the developers and marketers have been telling me we need to get involved in the world of blogging.  Apparently this is the new way to get your message “out there”.  It doesn’t involve a lot of spend on advertising or PR- which is good. It does involve a lot of time from people like me- which is not so good, there’s no shortage of things which need to be done. Read full post »
