In business the question “where are you based” used to be fundamental. Being local meant buyer and seller could meet across a desk. Products and services could easily, and cheaply be supplied. References could be checked.
Being “somewhere” meant quite a lot – but not anymore. The Internet has changed all that.
Our small business is a perfect example and today something happened to make me want to share what the Internet has enabled us to do.
We have a global supply chain and a global customer base. Our business is based in Chicago and we manage it from our home by the 1st tee of the finest golf club in the world, in the Scottish Highlands. We host our software in Dallas, managed by a business in New Zealand. Our designer is in North Carolina and our developers are in Winnipeg. Does this spread impact our service? Since January 2007 we’ve achieved 99.93% uptime so the answer is NO.
Our customer base is global too. This morning we completed the final piece in our jigsaw map with a registration from Saudi Arabia.
