My Top Ten Business Tools

Which business applications do you use?  Are they web based, or local?  Here”s our list.

Top Ten

  1. Google Search – what else?
  2. Google Mail – works anywhere, great archive capability, unlimited capacity (virtually) and the best Spam management.  Perversely it’s biggest weakness is Search, because of those awful “conversations.
  3. WordPress (Self hosted) – I love Posterous for its combination of simplicity and capability but WordPress gives me so much more control, with all those great plugins.
  4. Twitter – broadcasting and conversation
  5. Clicky – Monitoring and analytics on steroids with a great iPhone app.
  6. Google Reader – simple operation, lightweight client for iPhone, interfaces really well with Gruml for a desk top version.
  7. Google Docs – for writing, spreadsheets, sharing,  – all the office stuff, including accounting which I do with spreadsheets.
  8. Friendfeed – aggregating content, distributing content, search -all work brilliantly simply.
  9. Google Sites – for accounting I include documents and spreadsheets in pages and also upload .pdf copies of other documents. Sites makes it really easy to keep everything together.  It’s garbage as a publishing platform.
  10. Skype – we have phone numbers in the USA and the UK both of which get routed through to Skype which then passes calls through to cell phones.

And the most important of course is Front Office Box because that’s where we manage our business – all of the above are just tools we use.
