We’ve had outstanding returns on posting to our own blog – thanks to Google Search, and even more impressive returns from meeting people on Twitter.
Over the last couple of months I’ve posted a number of times on how we’re using Social Media Marketing.
Here’s an update on how this effort is returning rewards.
By way of background – last year we conducted a pilot study using Google Adwords, the idea being to test out which market segments we could get interest from, with which keywords, and at which cost.
To be fair the failure of this pilot might have been a self fulfilling prophesy on my part. I never did like the idea, but got persuaded to try it out. We paid an agency to manage the campaign for nearly six months and also paid Google more than a comfortable amount for the clicks.
Eventually we managed to find some spots where we could get new registrations at a cost around $30 but genuine adoption by these registrations was horrible. It may well have cost us $2,000 to get each serious user, and that wasn’t fun when we’re letting people use FOB for free.
As our users will know (unfortunately) we’re still waiting to release the new upgraded FOB 3. While waiting we’ve been testing the water with Social Media Marketing, starting with as many forums as we could find and then narrowing down our activities, based on returns.
Probably the biggest drain on our time has been Linked In. We’ve spent a lot of time there, met some nice people but not gotten any registrations.
The same is mostly true of a bunch of Ning forums. We have gotten a small number of sign ups but not enough to justify the time invested.
We’ve also been publishing stuff at Ezine Articles, Adds You and Google Knols. Ezine brought us some traffic but not much. The others we might as well not have bothered.
Enough of the bad news.
We’ve had outstanding returns on posting to our own blog – thanks to Google Search, and even more impressive returns from meeting people on Twitter.
Via Google Search we’ve had traffic and registrations from all over the world, including three tourism businesses we’d love to visit one day
Via Twitter we’ve had about the same amount of traffic but much higher rates of registration, and subsequent quality adoption.
Not surprisingly we’ve been pretty happy with this, and will keep up the blogging and tweeting.
if anybody wants help with a similar strategy – give me a call. I’ll be glad to share.
